Obesity statistics are very dim. More and more young people are dangerously overweight, as are adults. Being overweight can cause serious illnesses and conditions that have a negative impact on life as one knows it. Heart disease is one of the conditions that comes with being obese or overweight. In addition to that, there are health dangers of belly fat.

Those who carry extra weight around their midsections are at a greater risk of developing heart disease. But it doesn’t end there! There are a multitude of problems related to health that come with belly fat. For example, stroke, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides, some forms of cancer, sleep apnea, resistance to insulin, and metabolic syndrome. The larger the waist size, the greater the risk. Therefore, simply looking at yourself is a good indication of too much belly fat.

Another way to tell whether your waistline is too big is by measuring the circumference of your waist and your hips, and that comparing. The body mass index is also a good way to measure body fat as this compares height and weight.

Although genes play a role in your weight, your lifestyle is probably the culprit that adds those extra inches around the abdomen. Age causes muscle loss and a change in metabolism. Therefore, it is important to either reduce the amount of calories you ingest or increase your physical activities.

Reduce the amount of alcohol you drink. The infamous title of beer belly is not necessarily true to its name. Although beer can cause your belly to extend, all alcohol can settle in your midsection as well as cause overall weight gain. The only exception to this rule is wine, but drinking too much wine can also affect your liver just as all types of alcohol can, and therefore should also be drunk in moderation.

In conclusion, you can see how important it is to avoid getting belly fat. Slight lifestyle changes can mean the difference between living a long and healthy life and having to deal with debilitating diseases and conditions that will negatively affect your life for either a long time or could possibly end your life prematurely. Therefore, it cannot be stressed enough: reduce the amount of calories you ingest daily, reduce the amount of alcohol you drink, increase your physical activities with focus placed on the abdomen. These lifestyle changes are matter of life and death.
