Choosing Atkins Diet Foods For Successful Dieting

Atkins diet foods are available in most any grocery store and can be bought prepackaged or you can make your own meals from vegetables and meat. The key, is to know which foods to choose and which to stay away from.

When grocery shopping for your Atkins diet meals you want to keep the Atkins food pyramid in mind. This isn’t the same as the USDA food guide pyramid as it is more heavy on protein. The base of your meal should consist of eggs, fish, chicken, lean beef and tofu with the second tier of the pyramid being low glycemic index vegetables such as broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus and salad greens. the third tier of the pyramid consists of berries and avocados. Occasionally you can indulge in fruits (low glycemic index ones are best) and dairy, oils and legumes. Once in a great while you can add some whole grain foods in after you’ve passed the initial phase of the Atkins diet plan.

If you do not stay within the guidelines of the Atkins plan you will not experiencee a class on this type of diet so it is best to follow the menu plans in the Atkins book. You can also buy Atkins cookbooks or other low carb cookbooks and plan your meals from there.

What a good idea is to have a list of acceptable Atkins foods that you can carry in your purse or wallet and have with you whether you are grocery shopping or dining out aware of you go so you can jog your memory as to which foods are acceptable. Even if the food is labeled low-carb it still may have too many times for your particular phase of the diet. Your best bet is to study the labels on packaged foods carefully so you know exactly how many carbohydrates you are getting.

It shouldn’t be difficult to stick to your daily regime of Atkins diet food if you make it a priority to know which foods you can eat and which ones to avoid. Some dieters find it’s best to simply not have foods they can not eat in the house that way you’ll know that everything you have is acceptable for the Atkins plan.
