A low carbohydrate diet is one in which you eat less than the RDA of 300 grams. There are several variations on this type of diet; some of the better-known ones are being Atkins, Zone and South Beach but there are many low carb diets out there.
Why do people go on a low carb diet? The most popular reason is to lose weight, but a low carb diet will also help to control your blood sugar levels, blood pressure and cholesterol. Low carb diets seem to focus on the quantity of carbs you eat and have a strict induction phase. Low glycemic index diets focus on the quality of the carbs you eat and go for more of a low fat and healthy approach. Some diets like the South Beach Diet seem to mix a combination of both.
So, which one is best?
Well, I think that depends on your own preferences and how you like to eat. Some folks do very well on a low carb diet eating green leafy veggies and lots of meats. Others, like myself, don’t care too much for meat and struggle. (more…)
