Here’s a free list of low carb foods that you can use to start your own low carb eating plan or to get an idea of what foods you might be eating before you spend the money to buy a diet plan book or join an online low carb diet plan.
First on the free list of low carb foods is meat. All meats and sea food are carb free! That’s why you often hear of low carb diets being referred to as “eggs and bacon” diets
(eggs are carb free too!) Of course, you need to be careful of how the meat is prepared, hot dogs and many lunch meats have fillers that add carbs to the meat. If you are cooking chicken and add a sauce or BBQ topping, you are also adding carbs. And of course your side dishes add carbs as well.
But man cannot survive on meat alone! It’s not healthy, you need to eat lots of fresh vegetables like the ones below in your free list of low carb foods, along with some fruits and whole grains. In the beginning of your low carb diet, you’ll probably have to stick to just veggies and meat since the veggies have the lowest amount of carbs but eventually you will be able to add more and more carbs (especially if you are following the
South Beach Diet
in the form of wholesome fruits and whole grain foods. There’s also a many packaged low carb foods that you can add in to alleviate boredom and get the taste of some of your old high carb favorites back into your meals!
When you calculate the amount of carbs a food has, you need only to count the amount of carbs that your body digests - this is called the net carbs. If a food is high in fiber, some of the carbs will pass through the body undigested, so you may see a food that has 8 grams carbs, but only 4 grams net carbs - the 4 grams is the amount that “counts” towards your total carb count. So when figuring the carbohydrate content of any food, you first make note of the total carbs and then calculate the net carbs by subtracting the fiber. The free list of low carb foods below shows foods where each serving is 5g net carbs or less.
