Glycemic Index Diets

Low glycemic index diets (or low GI Diets) are a good balance between low carb and low fat “fad” diets that are predominant in todays market.
The glycemic index refers to the ranking of foods based on the way the increase a person’s insulin or blood sugar level. Foods with lower glycemic index ratings are preferred since they raise blood sugar slowly and keep you feeling full longer and avoid cravings that a sharp drop in blood sugar can cause.

Glycemic index diets use a combination of high GI and low GI foods to create an overall glycemic index value for the entire meal. Typically these diets try to avoid non nutritious foods made with white flour and sugar and in that respect are quite similar to low carb diets. They do, however, allow much more leeway in the types of foods combined in a meal and give you more choices with fruits and dairy products. Glycemic index diets compare closer to the South Beach Diet™ than any other low carb diet and are a healthy eating plan. These diets have been used in treatment of diabetes for years and are thought to help prevent heart disease.

Following Low GI Diets

On a low GI diet, you simply stick to eating carbohydrates that are on the lower scale of the glycemic index. This Glycemic Index Database will tell you the glycemic index and glycemic load of most foods. If you want a high GI food, you can combine it with some low GI foods to bring the glycemic index of the whole meal down.

While just doing the above will probably improve your health, it may not help you lose weight unless you also choose low fat, low glycemic foods and watch your calories. So, you do lose some of the “ease” of a low carb diet in which you can eat as much as you want and don’t have to look foods up in a chart, but you gain many many more food choices that are perhaps a bit more heart healthy.

If you’ve found a low carb diet just too restrictive, but you agree with the idea of lowering your blood sugar response you may do well to look into low glycemic index diets like NutriSystem - Only NutriSystem has the NEW good carb, low-fat weight loss solution!
