High Protein Low Carb Foods

Among the most popular diets are those that claim eating high protein low carb foods can help most people lose weight.
This “low carb craze” was started by Dr. Atkins in the 1970's with his Atkins Diet Plan and has since bloomed to include diets such as The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, The Zone Diet, The South Beach Diet, and Neanderthin. Low carb eating has become so popular that many food manufacturers are modifying the way they manufacture foods to remove some of the carbs. These days you can hardly walk through a grocery store without seeing a low carb version of milk, yogurt, juice and even bread and desserts!
While all the low carb diets are a bit different they have a common ingredient of being based on high protein low carb foods. These diets work on the basis that eating carbohydrates raise your blood sugar levels and cause weight gain, therefore they limit the amount of carbohydrates consumed in each meal or snack.
High Protein Low Carb Foods
The foods allowed on these diets can include some “natural” foods such as meats, vegetables and in some cases fruits. But you can also buy many manufactured high protein low carb foods such as low carb bars, candy bars, chips, dips, bread and muffin mixes, bagels and more!
Food choices on a high protein low carb diet can be boiled down to the simple rules below.Most diet plans do recommend an “induction phase” where your choices are more limited but these are typicaly the foods you should eat (and avoid) when eating low carb.
Foods Allowed
All meats (for optimal health stick to low fat meats only)
All fish
All shellfish
Low carb high protein veggies
Cheese
Eggs
Foods to Avoid
Lunch meats and packaged meats (check carb counts on package, some have added carbs!)
Breads, Bagels, Baked Goods (unless they are special low carb ones!
Candy, ice cream, anything with sugar
Starchy Vegetables such as potatoes and corn
High carb fruits like bananas
