A new study shows that the reason for low carb diet success is not the magic of eating less carbs and how it effects your insulin levels, but simply because people on a low carb diet eat less!
This study published in the March 15 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine did research on 10 people who were housed in the research facility and closely monitored. The subjects first ate their regular amounts of food so that the calories could be calculated and then after a week switched to a low carb diet – the result was that they ate on average 1000 less calories per day! The people participating in this study all tried different low carb diets, but each one was successful in losing weight over the years period.
This would seem to support the age old dieting theory that the amount of calories you eat and burn contributes directly to your success in losing weight – if you eat less than you need to fuel your body you lose weight – eat more and you gain. It would also seem to blow apart the theory that carbohydrates are burned differently by the body.
But don’t toss out your low carb diet book yet!
Along with weight loss success, it was also reported that the people in the study (all of whom had type 2 diabetes) had normalized blood sugar levels and improved cholesterol levels. Losing weight and getting healthier – what’s wrong with that?
One thing that contributed to the success of the low carb diets was that the participants did not complain about being hungry. Even though they were eating less calories, the low carb foods were able to keep them full longer than what they had been eating.
So while it may seem that switching to a low carb diet may not be a magic formula for weight loss, it can help with dieting success by keeping you fuller longer as well as help with blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
