Neanderthin The Cave Man's Diet
South Beach Diet™: Hundreds of recipes and 24-hour support!
Written in 1999, Neanderthin came about after the author, who was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, became disenchanted with modern health care, and embarked on a search to study the physiology and history of the diseases. His conclusion was that none of these diseases existed in pre-agricultural societies and that a stone age diet was best.
In Neanderthin, Ray Audette recommends getting back to basics and eating like our Paleolithic ancestors did. Which includes a diet based on pre-agricultural foods.
What is that, you might ask?
Any food that does not require the use of technology. That means no breads, no cakes, no beans, no coffee, peanuts or potatoes. Also on the hit list is dairy products, and sauces like soy sauce.
You are left with meat, eggs, seafood, a tiny amount of fruit is allowed as well as nuts. He is big on Pemmican (which is equal parts of raw dehydrated, powdered red meat and animal fat). | So you can eat all the Pemmican you want on this hunter-gatherer style diet.
This diet has no induction phase - you just go straight to your stone age hunter-gatherer diet by cutting out any processed food. It’s not easy to stick to this type of diet and you would be hard pressed to find good food choices while eating out or at a friends house.
Neanderthin: Pro'sReduces intake of sugary processed foods (these are bad for you no matter what diet you are on!)
Neanderthin: Con'sRelies heavily on meatNot well balanced Impractical for todays living
The book is well written and it is easy to see that a lot of research has gone in to it. I found it quite fascinating, even if I couldn’t stomach the diet.
