Pilates And Burning Calories
South Beach Diet™: Hundreds of recipes and 24-hour support!
The relationship between pilates and burning calories is pretty tricky – let’s face it we all know that the higher intensity the exercise, the more calories you burn and pilates is rather mellow as exercises go. But I wouldn’t discount this exercise as part of your weight loss routine as it has many benefits.
I recently tried pilates for the first time, thinking it looked so easy. Not so! It’s actually quite difficult and I even broke out into a sweat by the end. So that triggered and question in my mind about pilates and burning calories. Yes, I realized that it probably doesn’t burn as much as jogging or aerobics – both of which I hate, but I liked doing the exercises and was looking for some benefit and to possibly replace one of my other less liked exercise routines. Of course, the question of pilates and burning calories depends on the individual and the intensity of the pilates. Some workouts can be more strenuous than others and not everyone burns the same amount of calories for the same workout. In general, however, you can expect to burn about 250 calories per hour for an average weight person. The more you weigh the more you will burn. If you pick a very intense workout you will burn even more. Compared to an hour of walking at 4 mph this isn’t too bad considering the walk would burn about 300 calories. Compare that to low impact aerobics (approx. 400 calories per hour), weight lifting (approx. 203 calories per hour) and sleeping (approx 55 calories per hour) and I think pilates is a viable exercise alternative.
But there are other benefits to pilates than burning calories. This type of exercise works to strengthen and tone as well as improve balance and posture. It can actually make you look thinner! It will help create a more defined waist and smaller stomach as well as lean muscles. And it’s fun!
