Weight Loss Over 40

Losing weight gets harder as you get older so weight loss over 40 can be a challenge. As you age, your metabolism slows down and it may be harder to get in as strenuous a work out as when you were younger. You naturally become more sedentary as you simply don’t do the outside activities that you once could do. Juggling work with the care of aging parents and teen age children can constrain your time and leave you unable to fit in time to exercise and make proper meals.

So what’s a person over 40 to do?

You can experience weight loss over 40 but you just have to work at it a little harder. The first step is to set an exercise routine and stick to it.You must make this a priority - if you can’t fit in the time skip a half hour of TV and use that to exercise or get up an hour earlier. You might try walking on your lunch hour or parking further from work. Take the stairs whenever possible. Lift hand weights while talking on the phone or watching TV. Try to work in little bursts of exercise whenever possible!

The next step to successfully weight losing over 40 is to eat less. As your metabolism slows down you will not be able to maintain your weight by eating the same amount that you could eat when you were 30. You have to cut something out! Skip a couple of desserts a week if you are used to eating them or switch to a lower calorie version of something that you normally eat every day. Leaving a few bites of each meal on your plate can help save calories without making you feel deprived. When eating out, divide your meal in half as soon as you get it and take half home.

Switching from coffee to green tea can also help in the battle. It is reputed that some chemicals in green tea can cause the body to burn fat more efficiently and some in coffee may inhibit fat burning. No matter which you drink, try it without the sugar and cream - you’ll save quite a bit of fat and calories this way.

Equally important for your health and weight loss over 40 is eating right. Fresh fruits and vegetables are full of enzymes, vitamins and minerals that can help your body fight a host of disease including cancer and heart disease. Eating plenty of those along with low fat meats, poultry and seafood is key. Avoid bad carbs such as sugary snacks, soft drinks, and baked goods. Sticking to a low carb way of eating can be a great way to avoid non nutritious foods made with sugar and flour and getting in more wholesome foods.
